How Many Backlinks Do You Need to Rank on Google?
There is no magic number of backlinks to rank on Google. Learn how to estimate what your keyword needs by analysing competitors, and what matters more.
It is one of the most common SEO questions, and the honest answer is: it depends on the keyword. Some pages rank with no backlinks at all. Others need links from dozens of strong websites to reach the first page. There is no magic number, and anyone who quotes one without looking at your keyword is guessing.
What you can do is estimate the number for your own situation. Here is how.
Why there is no universal number
Google ranks pages, not websites, and it does so for each search separately. The links you need depend on:
- The competition. A query like "home loan" is fought over by banks and large publishers. "Tiffin service near Koramangala for students" is not.
- Search intent. If your page matches what searchers want better than anything else, you need fewer links.
- Content quality. Links amplify good pages. They rarely rescue weak ones.
- Link quality. One relevant link from a respected site can outweigh many weak ones.
- Your site as a whole. Links to your other pages, plus internal linking, help new pages on the same site.
How to estimate backlinks for a keyword
Step 1: Look at the top results
Search your keyword in Google from the location you care about. Note the top five to ten organic results, ignoring ads.
Step 2: Count referring domains, not backlinks
Referring domains are the number of unique websites linking to a page. One site can link to you a hundred times from its footer, but that is still one referring domain. Referring domains are a better measure of link breadth.
Use a free tool such as the Ahrefs free Backlink Checker or a free Moz or Semrush account to check the referring domains for each ranking page. Our guide to checking backlinks for free lists the options.
Step 3: Write the numbers down
| Ranking page | Referring domains to the page | Site strength (DA or DR) | Content match |
|---|---|---|---|
| Result 1 | ... | ... | Strong or weak |
| Result 2 | ... | ... | Strong or weak |
| Result 3 | ... | ... | Strong or weak |
Fill this in for your keyword. Look at the range, not the highest value. If several ranking pages have only a handful of referring domains, the keyword is within reach with good content and a modest number of quality links.
Step 4: Check for weak spots
Look for ranking pages that are outdated, thin, or not quite on topic. Those are your opportunities. A clearly better page with fewer links can overtake them.
Signs links are not your problem
Before chasing more backlinks, rule out more basic issues:
- Is the page indexed? Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console. A page Google has not indexed cannot rank. See how to get your website indexed faster.
- Does it match intent? If the top results are comparison lists and yours is a product page, links will not fix the mismatch.
- Is it linked internally? A page buried with no internal links gets less attention from crawlers and less value from your other pages.
- Is it the best answer? Compare depth, accuracy, freshness and usefulness honestly.
Quality beats quantity
Counting links can mislead. Google's systems aim to reward links that are freely given and relevant, and to ignore those built mainly to manipulate rankings. A few links from respected sites in your field, plus real mentions from your industry, usually do more than a large pile of low-quality ones. Read what makes a high-quality backlink for the signals to look for.
Where discovery backlinks fit in
For a brand-new site, the first problem is often not ranking but being found at all. Discovery backlinks, mentions of your URL on public lookup pages, give crawlers more paths to a new domain. Backlink Generator creates up to 100 of these in one free run with a free account. They are mostly nofollow, they will not count much toward the competitive gap you measured above, and they do not guarantee rankings. Think of them as a way to get on the map, then earn the links that move rankings.
A realistic plan
- Pick keywords where ranking pages have referring domains within your reach.
- Create the best page for that search.
- Link to it from relevant pages on your own site.
- Earn links through partners, PR, resource pages and genuinely useful content.
- Recheck rankings and competitor links every month or two.
FAQ
Can a page rank with zero backlinks?
Yes, for low-competition and very specific searches, especially on a site that already has some authority and good internal linking. For competitive terms it is rare.
How long do backlinks take to affect rankings?
There is no fixed timeline. The linking page has to be crawled and processed first, and the effect depends on the link and the competition. Expect weeks to months, not days.
Should I count backlinks or referring domains?
Referring domains. Many links from the same site add far less than links from many different relevant sites.
